Pleasure Beach- One step closer or one step back?

A volunteer collects trash at the inlet at Pleasure Beach during the 2009 Pleasure Beach Boat Lift and Cleanup Aug 15, 2009With the recent demolition of the carousel building and bumper car building at Pleasure Beach, it makes one wonder are we getting any closer to opening the former "Jewel of the Eastern Seaboard" or is this yet one more step closer to forever banning humans from the beach?

City officials have proven to be most helpful in building CCB and allowing us access at the former landfill site, but this was not our original intended destination. As you might know CCB received support from the Parks Board and the Parks Director as well as the former Mayor and former Harbor Master to locate CCB out on Pleasure Beach. This would have served two purposes. Not only would we have been allowed to provide access to Long Island Sound from a property that has been shut down now for near 20 years, but it would also allow us a base of operations to remediate the flow of trash that has collected on this most tragic of places. We would be there daily to monitor the protection of the property and the wildlife while allowing folks to use the beach and water in passive and an environmentally friendly manner.

We even had a water taxi ready to lease to provide this service and insurance. We just needed permission.

Well Mayor Miron and the Stratford people shut us out on the east side and Bridgeport politics killed our plans on the west side. So gratefully and happily we moved to Seaside and have had a tremendous couple of years.

We at CCB would love to help negotiate a compromise with the birders and the builders. We have a plan that would have ZERO impact in the wildlife and would once again allow children to frolic in the surf at this historic and beautiful place. To start though, we need to dispense with the conjecture and misinformation, get some honesty from the officials who hold the reigns and develop funding channels to make this plan a reality.

With these things in place, we can open Pleasure Beach for passive public recreation by June 2010 and still operate our public launching facility at Seaside Park for many more generations to come.

We need your support, we need your help, we need your dollars to make this happen and we need it today.

Join the cause of Connecticut Community Boating. Help us build a brighter future for The Greater Bridgeport Area. And lets bring family fun in the sun back to beach in Bridgeport!
